What is the Summer Music Academy?
The Summer Music Academy is an unprecedented cross-cultural learning opportunity for young music enthusiasts. The camp is led by four internationally acclaimed choral conductors, using the teaching methods of the Vienna Boys Choir, one of the oldest and most successful choirs in the world. Together they will lead the participants through a series of choral training and cultural activities, not only to sharpen their musical skills but also their intercultural competence.

Andy Icochea Icochea is a multi-faceted musician who regularly appears as an orchestral and opera conductor, choral conductor and accompanist, and whose compositions and arrangements are performed internationally. He has appeared in over 500 concerts in 29 countries and four continents, in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Suntory Hall, Wiener Musikverein, Tonhalle Zürich and Berliner Konzerthaus. As a guest conductor, he has led the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, Orquesta Filarmónica de Ciudad de México, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional del Perú and the Brookline Symphony, among others.
Icochea Icochea has collaborated as choral conductor and rehearsal accompanist with Riccardo Muti, Georges Prêtre, Adam Fischer, Franz Welser-Möst, Bertrand de Billy and Bernard Haitink. His choruses have performed with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony, the Royal Stockholm Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony. He has conducted world premieres of operas in Austria, Italy and the United States. Additionally, he has served as choral clinician and conductor for the World Peace Choir (Vienna and Beijing) and guest clinician for Boston Symphony Orchestra education programs.
He currently serves as Music Director of Superar, a non-profit organization that provides high quality music instruction free of charge to 2000 children in six countries in central and Eastern Europe. Previously, he has served as Kapellmeister of the Vienna Boys Choir and Artistic Director of Voices Boston and Harvard Pro Musica.

Agnes Quilicot is an all-round musician. She is a vocalist, a conductor, an instrumentalist and a composer.
Quilicot obtained her degree in Choral Conducting with concentration on voice from the University of the Philippines – College of Music (U.P.C.Mu), followed with Liturgical Music Composition Studies at the Paul VI Institute of Liturgy, She also holds a degree of Psychology and Theatre Arts.
Quilicot has trained the three-time World Grand Prix Champion Choir, the Philippine Madrigal Singers under the direction of the late Prof. Andrea O. Veneracion and Mark Carpio. She has also performed as an opera singer in various opera productions in the Philippines, Hong Kong and China.
Quilicot is experienced in both elementary music education and choral conducting. Under her baton, the choirs have won numerous awards including the “Champion in Kindergarten Music Activities” at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and international competitions by the International Vocal Union, the Asian Choir Association, the China Music Association (Hong Kong), the Choir Union of Guangdong Musician Union and the International Federation of Choral Music. Moreover, she is always invited for performances of rate Consulate and has been the conductor of the Cathay Pacific Choir for 2 seasons, She was recently featured at the Third Asian International Choir Festival where she conducted a choir with the Italian conductor and choral music expert, Dr. Andrea Angelini.
Quilicot became a Vienna Boys Choir Certified Music Pedagogue in 2015 after her intensive music training in the Vienna Boys Choir.
Carey Shunskis is a music educator, conductor and professional soprano originally from Philadelphia. Ms. Shunskis received Masters of Music degree in choral conducting from Boston University and Bachelors of Music degrees in music education and voice performance from the University of Rhode Island, where she is an annual guest conductor with the Alumni Chorus. Ms. Shunskis is the Resident Conductor of Harvard Pro Musica, an amateur choir west of Boston, and is the Founding Director of the South Shore Children’s Chorus, which offers music education through choral singing to singers ages 4-18. She is an advocate for musical literacy through choral music and promotes sight-singing fluency in the choirs she conducts.
Ms. Shunskis teaches elementary general music and chorus in Braintree, MA, and runs a private voice and piano studio at her home in Brookline, MA. Ms. Shunskis is a regular soloist with Music of Marsh Chapel and a member of the Handel and Haydn Society Chorus in Boston. She founded the vocal chamber ensemble The Brookline Consort and regularly performs with the Eccelisa Consort of Providence, the Weimar Bach Academy, the Choralp festival in France, and is a founding member of VOICES 21C.
Eunice Suen attended the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (Trinity College of Music), where she obtained her Master of Arts in Music Education and Vocal Performance. Prior to her master studies, she earned her Bachelor of Music in Opera and Vocal Studies in the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. There she was awarded a scholarship to take up music training in Berlin, Germany.
As a Certified Music Pedagogue in the Vienna Boys Choir Music Academy, Suen teaches choirs and classes on a daily basis. She also works as a professional music teacher of the voice, piano, music theory and aural training, not only in Hong Kong but also in London and Vienna. Her students encompass different levels from elementary to advance, covering a wide range of ages. Her reputation as an experienced teacher and performer is recognized when various music competitions invited her to be a member of the jury.
As a talented performer, Suen is competent in performing an extensive range of musical work. Her operatic repertoire includes Carmen, Così fan tutte, King Arthur, L’incoronazione di Poppea andA Mid-Summer Night’s Dream. She has also been engaged in opera scenes from Aïda, Le nozze diFigaro, Idomeneo, Giulio Cesare, Eugene Onegin and a number of productions by Opera Hong Kong. In 2009, Suen performed The Magic Flute with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing National Grand Theatre. Besides theatrical works, she also gives regular departmental solo, ensemble and choir concerts. She was also an active member of the Philharmonia Chorus (London). Numerous performance opportunities led her to many world-renowned halls including the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal Festival Hall (London), Chapel of King’s College (Cambridge), Palau de la Música (Spain) and so on.
In 2009 and 2012, Suen was invited by the Hong Kong Church Music Association to record church music for a series of CDs that were published and online sound tracks made available to public.
Manfred Payrhuber was a soloist of the St. Florianer Sängerknaben (St. Florian Boys’ Choir).
After matriculating from the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium Grieskirchen (state run upper secondary school) he studied German Literature and Music at the Pädagogische Hochschule des Bundes (Federal Teachers’ College) in Linz. He then completed a specialised course of studies in singing under the supervision of Professor Gerald Trabesinger at the Anton Bruckner University in Linz, graduating with distinction. In 1993 he completed the degree course “Song and Oratory” under the supervision of Professor Thomas Kerbl, once more graduating with distinction.
Besides his work as a teacher, Manfred Payrhuber dedicates himself intensively to solo song. His repertoire includes the song cycles by Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann as well as songs by Johannes Brahms, Hugo Wolf, Richard Strauss and others.
Recordings for the Austrian broadcasting company Österreichischer Rundfunk and on CD document his particular passion for solo song.
Starting from 1992, Manfred Payrhuber has conducted the students’ choir “Discipuli cantantes” of the Neue Mittelschule (secondary school) Gaspoltshofen. This choir from Upper Austria has won numerous national and international competitions.
In 2008 he assumed the artistic direction of the men’s choir “Liedertafel Gaspoltshofen” and in 2014 the musical direction of the symphonic brass orchestra Geboltskirchen.
Since the years of his training, he has always taken a particular interest in educating and promoting young and talented voices. Manfred Payrhuber has been working as a singing teacher at the BORG [state run upper secondary school] Grieskirchen since 2000 and as a voice teacher at the Konservatorium für Kirchenmusik [Church Music Conservatory] in Linz since 2016.
Under his conduct, the Academy Singers have continuously achieved national and international successes since 2009.
On concert tours with his choirs he visited Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Romania, Russia, Spain and China.
Joyce Lau is a music educator and organist who also specialises in voice, piano performance and ethnomusicology.
Lau obtained her Master of Philosophy in Music, Bachelor of Arts in Music and Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Education at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. During her study, she was placed on the Faculty Dean’s List and obtained scholastic awards from German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) and Peter Curzon Oram Charitable Trust. Lau also holds the Licentiate Diploma in Organ Recital (Distinction) from Trinity College London.
Lau has presented research papers on Jewish music in international conferences and translated academic articles for publication. She has also worked in various music projects with local and overseas institutes, to study, document and promote historical musical instruments.
Lau is a music pedagogue with more than ten years of teaching experience. She has taught students of a wide age range at recognised music academies, children’s choirs and music theatres, in addition to international schools and local schools. Her excellence in education has led her to teaching engagements at local universities and overseas seminary, including early childhood music education. Lau’s teaching style is rigorous but inspiring, authentic but fun. Under her tutelage, Lau’s choirs, vocal students and piano students all enjoy music and have won awards from the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival as well as other inter-school music events.
In addition to teaching, Lau is also a choral conductor and piano accompanist. She often arranges music for her choirs and music ensembles. She plays the piano not only for choirs, classical singers and instrumentalists but also in occasions such as weddings and Jewish Purim Schpiel.
Lau is now working as a church organist and has performed on the Rieger organ at Hong Kong Cultural Centre. She is a Certified Vienna Boys Choir Pedagogue at the Vienna Boys Choir Music Academy since 2016.
Born in 1984 in Vienna, Alexander Jost received his first musical education with the Vienna Boys’ Choir. Whilst at the Vienna Music High School he studied piano with Professor Stalze at the Prayner Conservatory. As a choir singer he gathered experiences at first with the Chorus Viennensis and the Choralschola of the Vienna Imperial Chapel. Later on he also became a member of several other renowned choirs and vocal ensembles in Vienna. Moreover, he collaborated with the Institute for Musical Education for six years.
He acquired his know-how in choir conducting in a master class with University Professor Herbert Böck. He then worked as a choirmaster with several choirs in Vienna and Lower Austria as well as regularly as a répétiteur at the acting academy “Elfriede Ott” and as a musician in the “Empire Studio Wien”. Subsequently he took over the musical coaching of the new vocal ensemble “VieVox”. With the Vienna Boys’ Choir, he now also is in charge of the preparatory musical education of the boys attending the institute’s own primary school.
As from autumn 2013 he is the artistic leader of the “Chorus Viennensis” where he has been successfully active for many years as a singer, répétiteur, musical arranger and assistant to his predecessors.
